We are delighted to be celebrating our 5th birthday and marking the anniversary with the
opening of a new Maidenhead town centre office.
The move into affordable space, supported by local businesses, means we can meet as a
team, offer private appointments with parents, host some of our club activities and have
our own much needed storage space.
We launched TAG (The Autism Group) five years ago with a single Pokémon activity club for
a handful of young people, and now run 11 groups offering five different themed Saturday
clubs with around 90 children and young adults joining in once a month or more.
We added parent support services along the way, including 1:1 home visits and informal
drop in sessions in Maidenhead, Slough and Bracknell and are proud to be a service provider
for East Berks Autism and ADHD service, known as GEMS (https://www.gems4health.com/).
Charity manager Tricia Kempton said:
“We have met some amazing young people, parents, carers, families and friends since we
started out and we’re thrilled to be celebrating our 5th anniversary after what has been a
difficult year for everyone.
We understand, accept and celebrate the unique characteristics and talents of young people
on the spectrum and they and their families are offered a warm welcome, along with well informed support.”
We are immensely grateful to those organisations who have funded our work and continue
to support us. They include: The Albert Hunt Foundation, Co-op Community Fund, Children
in Need, East Berkshire NHS Clinical commissioning Group, The Louis Baylis Trust, the
National Lottery Community Fund, Maidenhead Rotary Cub, Maidenhead Round Table, The
Prince Phillip Trust, MCKS Charity UK, The Shanly Foundation and those brave individuals
who have walked, cycled and run in our name.
We formed The Autism Group with the aim of enhancing the lives of young people on the
spectrum, their parents and carers and initially tackled the lack of social opportunities for
secondary school age pupils on the spectrum.
Research has shown that families living with autism have been disproportionately affected
by the pandemic and the resulting difficulties of accessing education, support services and
the impact on mental health and well-being.
We are needed now more than ever to support local families. We kept going throughout
lock down with virtual clubs and support services, and now we can’t wait to welcome
everyone back face to face just as soon as possible – that will be the best birthday present
we could wish for.
The Autism Group will continue in the year ahead with a blend of virtual and face to face
support. Find us at:
